Girl changing car tire in Athens Georgia

Getting a flat tire can be frustrating, but knowing how to change it can save you time and money. With a few simple steps, you can learn how to change a tire like a pro, even if you're a beginner. Follow this step-by-step guide to get back on the road in no time.

Learn How to Change a Tire on Your Car:

Find a Safe Location to Change Your Tire.

Before you start changing your tire, make sure you find a safe location to do so. Pull over to the side of the road, away from traffic, and make sure your car is on a flat surface. If you're on a busy road or highway, try to find an exit or rest area where you can safely change your tire. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers that you're stopped. Never attempt to change a tire on a slope or uneven surface, as this can be dangerous.

Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials.

Before you start changing your tire, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials. You will need a spare tire, a lug wrench, and a jack. These items should be located in your car's trunk or under the floor mat in the back seat. If you don't have these items, you may need to call for roadside assistance or borrow them from another driver. It's also a good idea to wear gloves and have a flashlight on hand in case you need to change your tire at night.

Loosen the Lug Nuts and Jack Up the Car.

The first step in changing a tire is to loosen the lug nuts. Use the lug wrench to turn each nut counterclockwise, but don't remove them yet. Just loosen them enough so that you can easily remove them later. Next, locate the jack points on your car. These are usually indicated by small notches or arrows on the frame of the car. Place the jack under the jack point and begin to raise the car by turning the jack handle clockwise. Make sure the jack is securely in place before continuing.

Remove the Flat Tire and Replace with the Spare.

Once the car is raised, it's time to remove the flat tire. Use the lug wrench to fully remove the lug nuts and carefully pull the tire off the wheel base. Then, take the spare tire and place it onto the wheel base, lining up the holes with the bolts. Replace the lug nuts and tighten them by turning them clockwise with the lug wrench.

Lower the Car and Fully Tighten the Lug Nuts.

Once you have successfully replaced the flat tire with the spare tire, it's time to lower the car back down to the ground. Use the jack to slowly lower the car until the spare tire is firmly on the ground. Then, use the lug wrench to fully tighten the lug nuts by turning them clockwise. It's important to make sure the lug nuts are tightened as much as possible to ensure the safety of the driver and passengers. Finally, double check the tire pressure of the spare tire and make sure it's at the recommended level before driving.
